Creating Creatures

With a thumping heart he turned to face the monstrous creatures that stood towering before him...

The problem was, the author didn't have a clue what these creatures were, what they looked like. Careful planning was sought, but hard to come by. When and how it would finally appear she wasn't quite sure, but she knew she'd have to come up with something, anything. What creature dwelled inside the forest, what stood waiting to greet him in a near-fatal way, what was it that reflected in those scared, scared eyes that left him running for his life?

Window Ledge

She clasped her fingers around the pen. He had been thinking of her. He had wanted to help her. Now they had taken them away from each other and he said if that were to happen, he wanted her to get away. In particular if she was scared, which she was, a bit. She stood up, and made her way to the door, checking again to see if it had unlocked itself yet. It hadn't. She instead turned for the window and pulled open the glass. They were up high. The ground was a fair way down. No way could she jump. She peered across the exterior wall. Maybe if she could get hold of the ledge... but what if she were to fall? Then what? Still.. to remain inside that tiny locked room... she placed her hands on the window frame and made her decision.

Future Firefighter

I'd thought about what they'd said in the news report. Pa's cracked and crumbling voice, Grandma standing right beside him. He wants to be a firefighter. My heart shattered preciously against my chest, the sheer thought of recruitment beginning to slip quickly away. I'd dreamed of that career since I was little, shortly after the fire. I'd never considered anything different, despite my grandparent's attempts at trying to get me to expand my preferences. My constant refusals stopped them trying, knowing that I could love nothing more. Learning to save lives like that of my family. Of other families. How though, could I save anyone now? I could barely save myself and that was beginning to scare me.

Caught Up

25 September 2010

I wanted to retort, to retreat further into my cage, but before I could stop myself I was clambering out, desperate to stretch my legs. I wanted to make my run escape, but again there were more of them then there was of me, and so I settled with just crawling out. Cameron wasn’t with them. I didn’t know if that was good or bad, but I kept my mouth shut. Someone had the lead to the collar in their hands and that scared me. They reached down to attach it. I scrambled away, crawling unconsciously towards the door, though at a much slower pace then them and they caught up with me much too easily. I heard the click of the two chains meeting, the instant pull of it and I stopped struggling, eyes for the ground. I would not look at them. I couldn’t look at them.

Shock

28 May 2010

He lay staring up at the ceiling, heart pounding, and yet he didn’t move an inch. He kept his mouth shut and refrained from shifting a finger from under the blanket. He was too scared to fall asleep. It wasn’t safe. He had to get out somewhere but he was as still as a statue. He wondered if he’d been in shock yet. Maybe this was shock. That or just complete terror. The second option was likely. How did he get himself into this mess? He wanted to cry, but that would involve moving. He shut his eyes briefly for a moment, exhausted, but opened them again abruptly. He would not fall asleep.

Real Action

I sped around the corner, following him. Scared, innocent little Damien. I just wish I could see exactly how paranoid I was making him. I bet he was sweating over the wheel, fingers in a locked grip. I wanted to laugh, but I didn't feel it would be worth it. I was kind of ashamed of myself. At least I wasn't going to be the one crashing, I suppose. I took out my phone and text him that last mesage he would read. That would stump him, cause his heart rate to double again. With that, I swept off onto a side road, ready to wait out the remaining minutes before the real action set in.

Hurt You

6 May 2010

He slowed down when he saw the car that had passed him earlier parked up ahead. He debated for a minute whether to turn the other way, but decided against it when he saw the young man get out. That was one person he wasn’t going to turn his back to.

“Caleb?” He didn’t seem to recognise the name, but it was definitely the boy from the photos. Skinnier. Weakened. His hair was overgrown, an untidy mess, but hidden beneath would be those same liquid brown eyes.

“Get in the car,” he spoke. His voice was worn. Scared. Fake. His voice was saying something different to his heart.

“Caleb . . .” he whispered again.

“Please, just get in the car,” he ordered a little louder, “I don’t want to have to hurt you.”

He stared absently at the ceiling above him. It was quiet. Too quiet. Not a single voice inside his head, or out. It almost scared him. There was always someone talking. Usually yelling at him to do something right. But it did make a difference not to have someone whispering in your ear at every point. No voices. He tried to move, and felt a pain shoot through his body. What had happened? Where was he? He blinked a few times. Did he really care anymore? It didn't matter where he was. His eyes began to droop close again. Sleep seemed almost impossible to ignore. While there were no voices, there was no need to listen, to pay attention. And so he shut his eyes again, willing his remaining energy back beneath the surface.

Goodnight Chloe

He stood in the dark, staring down at her beautiful figure - so young and innocent. She looked even more innocent when she was sleeping as she was now. He let out a smile at the little girl's beauty - beauty which she would not fully understand until she was much older. She shifted slightly in her sleep, possibly dreaming about fairies or pincesses, as little girls should. She was truly his little angel, no other words could describe her. It was as if she'd been sent specifically into his life, to light his way towards some kind of direction. He sighed. He knew that would happen. To be truly honest with himself, he was scared out of his wits. And even she couldn't change that. He picked up the blanket she had half tossed off herself, and tucked her in. She didn't move a muscle, too deeply lost in an alternate reality.

"Goodnight Chloe," he whispered, "Sweet dreams."

Full Of Emotion

It's amazing how many emotions and feelings you can go through in a day. From the stupidness and embarrasment, to the quiet and reserved, to the nervous and squirmish. To the dizziness and annoyed, to the happy and focused. From there everything can drop to worry and sadness, hopelessness. Which can speed right back up to joy and laughter, and the best feelings in the world. Then you rewind slowly into the reminiscing thoughtful stage, and the comforting stage of someone else's problems. Then you listen to the noises around you, and slow down for the night, ready to get back to the business of brainstorming: losing yourself in another world again, to experience someone else's emotions. Someone who lives in pain and heartache. Someone who is scared and afraid, yet angry and crying on the inside. Someone who is weak and helpless, who can barely let out a smile some days. Someone who is hurt. And you remind yourself that you need to change that soul's life around into the randomness that your life brings - the range of other emotions that need to be spread around equally. Because you're the writer, and you're the only one who can do so.
